Gold Rush Summer Challenge 2008 Team Jabookoo won the Gold Rush Summer Challenge in a time of 5:59:35 which closely matched the 'Six Hour Adventure Race' billing. Teams began with an orienteering section of 7 miles on the rocky terrain of Red Hills where 'Saturdays Warriors' returned in the lead to ACP1 and the transition to bikes They were followed in swift succession by 6 chasing teams. The fast 24 mile bike leg took teams to the river where 'Saturdays Warriors' retained their lead over Jabookoo while BAARBD/RacingWithGiants had passed 'Young and The Restless' and 'Ephinephrine' and arrived in a solid third place. The transition at ACP2 from bikes to boats sees teams put into the Tuolumne River beside the small village of La Grange. Boats lined up on the old bridge are portaged down beneath the bridge to the put in. The Tuolumne River flows out of the huge Don Pedro Lake on its way to the San Francisco bay. In spring, were it not a drought year, the river would be an impressive flow - in midsummer fo a drought year it is merely sedate. Unfortunately the strategy of 'Saturdays Warriors' was to fit three paddlers into one canoe and they pushed off with a high center of gravity resulting in several dunkings before getting their boat balanced. Even then, the greater displacement of the heavily loaded canoe worked against them on the shallow river and they were passed by both Jabookoo and BAARBD/RacingWithGiants during the 8 miles of river. Thanks are due to all the volunteer workers who make an event like this possible; in order of appearance: Tim Kuenster, Kent Ryhorchuk, Will Gilmore, Charlie Johnson, Dale Ghaner, Suzy Bacerro, Deborah Steinberg and Connie Arthur The Gold Rush Team.
